Repeating patterns
Creating patterns
In Illustrator we practised creating patterns.Steps to create the book cover below were:
Creating a pattern by scribbling with the pencil tool, select it then choose Object, Pattern, Make. Choose overlapping tiles and change the width and height, click done. The I created the text and filled it with the pattern created. I then drew a wedge shape with the pend over the text, selected them both then Object, Envelope Distort, Make with top object. I then reflected the text by Object, Transform, Reflect.

Typesetting
Menus
We spent the lesson learning about typesetting and working from a type spec to lay out a restaurant menu. Then we designed our own type spec for the same Italian Restaurant. The format for each item was saved as a character style which stays with the document. All typos in the spec have to be resolved to ensure the styling is consistent.

Branding
Logo
We were tasked with designing a typographic logo for Job Seekers. This is what I came up with in InDesign. I prefer the logo on the top right hand side, as the colour is more interesting and the triangle makes it seem more dynamic. Making the word 'job' bleed out of the triangle also adds to the movement. I chose a script font to appear welcoming and link with handwriting job application forms, and a sans serif to look professional and polished. Darker blue seems more serious and indicates trustworthiness, but the mid blue makes it stand out more.

Brushes
Creating custom brushes
Paste an image into Photoshop, select it then go to Image, Adjustments, Threshold. Select the setting that looks best. Select the image then choose Edit, Define Brush Preset. The brush tool can be used to copy your chosen image, resize and colour it. I added some noise then the text.

Hand drawn typography
A scan of the hand drawn typography we did in class, before scanning and editing in Illustrator and Photoshop:
After using live trace, expand, and live paint in Illustrator, printing it out, screwing it up, then editing in Photoshop and adding noise:

Destroyed typography
Digital destruction
I started off with the alphabet in Century Gothic. I then scribbled over the letters with a fine black pencil, a thicker black brush, and a white brush. I then added dots of black and white.4 November 2014

Visual communication
Pathos, logos and ethos
The above thumbnails were generated to design a poster to increase the number of 18-25 year olds who give blood.
The main reasons this group do not donate are:
- fear of needles ("it's not really a hassle, it won't hurt and it's not scary")
- too busy (book online, takes 1 hour)
- don't know how (website)
bandwagon/everyday - everyone's doing it - make it the norm - don't be the odd one out
celebrity endorsement - David Beckham in second thumbnail
pathos - feel guilty for not doing it when 1 in 4 will need blood, die without it
logos - it takes less than 1 hour, book online
ethos - if you give blood you'll have something in common with David Beckham.
